Claude identifies origin of decades-old NIST curve seeds

Anthropic's Claude determined in under 30 minutes that unexplained seeds behind NIST standard elliptic curves originated from the standard C library generator lrand48.

Anthropic's Claude system identified the source of the initialization seeds used in standard NIST elliptic curves, resolving a 25-year-old question in digital signature security. The National Security Agency had originally supplied the seed values without public derivation details, prompting long-standing debate among cryptographers over possible hidden vulnerabilities.

The model determined within 30 minutes of analysis that the constant values were produced by lrand48, a standard pseudo-random number generator included in C runtime libraries. The finding indicates the historical seeds were generated algorithmically using basic library functions rather than designed with intentional backdoors.
