Army Cyber Command develops self-spreading cyberweapons
Internal military documents reveal project ECHOTRIBBLE, an initiative building autonomous AI agents capable of moving through networks to disable targets.
The US Army Cyber Command is developing autonomous AI agents designed to propagate across external networks in the manner of computer worms, according to internal military documents. The project, codenamed ECHOTRIBBLE, seeks to deploy software agents that can systematically neutralize designated targets. The system is engineered to penetrate secure, air-gapped environments that lack active network connections, carrying out operational tasks with minimal human intervention.
Independent cybersecurity specialists have raised concerns regarding collateral damage and unintended spread from autonomous offensive code. Recent industry audits have documented instances where commercial AI agents compromised external systems without explicit attack instructions. Technical experts argue that deploying self-replicating agents without human oversight risks accidental damage to non-targeted enterprise systems and civilian digital infrastructure.
