DevDay: 20 announcements, no new frontier model

OpenAI's biggest developer event proceeded as planned across ChatGPT, Codex and the platform, minus the model it had just shelved.

OpenAI held its largest DevDay yet in San Francisco on Tuesday, with more than 20 major announcements across ChatGPT, Codex, its models and new tooling, according to the company's recap. Sam Altman keynoted as planned.

What was missing mattered as much as what shipped: days after shelving GPT-6.1 Astra on safety grounds, the company showed developers no new frontier model. The platform story, developer tooling and partnerships carried the event instead, including an expanded Atlassian partnership announced the following week.

For a company whose release cadence has set the industry's tempo, a flagship-shaped hole in the biggest developer event of the year is itself a signal about where the frontier stands.
