AMD buys World Labs and hires Fei-Fei Li
An $8.2 billion all-stock deal brings the spatial-intelligence lab in house, and Li joins as AMD's chief scientist.
AMD will acquire World Labs, the spatial-intelligence company founded by AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion in an all-stock transaction, the chipmaker announced Monday. Li joins AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su.
World Labs built its name on models that understand and generate 3D space rather than flat pixels, an approach Li has described as a foundation for spatial intelligence. AMD had previously invested in the company; the acquisition pulls the team, and its ambitions, directly into the chipmaker's AI compute stack.
For AMD, it is a play to close the gap with Nvidia in AI compute with differentiated capability rather than another accelerant. For the field, it is the clearest sign yet that spatial and world models are being absorbed into the platform layer.
