Nvidia buys the world's model shelf
The chipmaker will pay $12.9 billion for Hugging Face, the open-source hub at the center of the open-weights world.
Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the open-source hub that hosts most of the world's open-weight models, for $12.9 billion, the company confirmed. Under the agreement reported by the BBC, about $11.9 billion goes to Hugging Face investors with up to $1 billion in stock-based incentives for employees.
The deal puts the de facto public library of open AI under the control of the company that sells most of the compute it runs on. Hugging Face's neutrality has been a load-bearing assumption for the open-weights ecosystem, from DeepSeek to Qwen to Gemma; its new owner now has commercial reasons to prefer some of those models over others.
Nvidia's position on the policy questions around agents remains confrontational: Jensen Huang has dismissed calls for tighter regulation and argues rogue-agent behavior is an engineering problem, even as his company sells the containment tools to solve it.
